The Cave Monastery · Orheiul Vechi
The best-known, carved into the cliff above the Răut meander at Butuceni. Active again since 1996. The signature image of Moldova.
In the Middle Ages, Orthodox monks carved their cells and churches straight into the limestone cliffs above the Răut and the Dniester. Some cave monasteries are active again today, others remain as silent traces in the rock face. They are among the most spectacular and least-known places in the country.

Moldova's most visited pilgrimage site, with an old cave section in the gorge of 22 waterfalls. Pairs the monastery well with a hike.
A lesser-known cave hermitage, close to the city, for those who want quiet without the crowds.
In the far north, near the Dniester, in a landscape of reef-ridges and forests. Worth pairing with Soroca Fortress on a long day.
