Worth it for an hour of contemporary Moldovan painting at 30 lei, with a chance of meeting the artist in the hall · check arta.md for what is on. Expect a tired building, with the lights sometimes off, per reviews.
The exhibition centre of the Union of Artists, at Ștefan cel Mare boulevard 3, at the lower end of the centre, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-16:00, closed on Mondays. The Union's site, arta.md, announces the openings in the small hall and the large hall, from municipal salons to shows of Bessarabian masters. It bears the name of the sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, but, as one visitor notes, "don't expect to find any of his actual works or copies here". Reviews are split. The good ones: "large space exhibiting modern paintings, really blown away with the quality of the art shown, well worth a visit", with "a very reasonable 30 Moldovan lei entrance"; at one show, the painter Mihail Brunea was there "and he guided us through his works, showing us details we'll never know unless he told us"; "one of the best places if you don't mind the old building". The 3-star ones: "the atmosphere seems really cold, could be the lights · I was there in the working hours, but the lights in the exhibition were off"; "a modern building in one of the less scenic, let's be real, kind of gloomy parts of the city", with "intriguing female figures, honestly gorgeous" by Natalya Vlasova on the facade, but an interior "pretty run-down with cracks and smudges everywhere", "some beautiful paintings, but also some pieces by newbies".
