Muzeul de Cultură și Civilizație „La Gura Prutului" · Giurgiulești
Museum at Giurgiulești river port - Moldova's only access to the sea
Ethnographic river exhibition + tour of the Danube port
Worth it if you reach the country's far south - a riverside ethnographic museum next to Giurgiulești port, Moldova's outlet on the Danube.
"La Gura Prutului" Museum stands in Giurgiulești, the village at the confluence of the Prut and Danube and Moldova's only direct access point to the Danube (480 m of river bank obtained through a territorial swap with Ukraine in 1999, which enabled the construction of the international port). The museum presents Bessarabia's fluvio-maritime history - traditional Danube fishing, 17th-19th c. trade with the Ottoman Empire and the Levant, deltaic fauna (migratory birds, giant catfish, sturgeon), and the ethnography of local Lipovan and Gagauz villages. Outdoor display of traditional lotci boats, nets and fishing tools. Visitors can continue with a tour of the Giurgiulești port, a walk along the Danube dyke, and birdwatching in the wetlands of the Lower Prut reserve.
