A tour through old houses kept whole, led by the family that saved them
Worth the drive if you want the Moldovan village whole rather than behind glass, houses restored one by one by the founding family, on the bank of the Dniester. Book the tour ahead, or you arrive at a closed gate.
An open-air museum at Molovata Nouă, at Strada Livezilor 29, on the bank of the Dniester. It is the rural initiative of Ion and Elena Ștefăniță, who, per the site, "conserve and restore authentic peasant houses" and promote "a return to the hearth" and rural tourism, with a collection of objects and artefacts from the traditional life of Moldovan peasants. Google shows hours only on Saturday and Sunday, from 8:00 to 20:00, and the site asks you to book the tour · the visit is scheduled, it is not an open door. Reviews do not talk about exhibits, but about the feeling of entering a house where someone really lived: "a haven of peace, ecology and beautiful handicraft", "you step into another world, where time seems to stop and the soul rests", "the place where Moldova is reborn · traditions, nation, spirit and man", with the silence of the village and the air at the edge of the Dniester. Ion Ștefăniță is named, with the passion and determination with which he "brought back moments from the past". A four-star review says exactly what you need to know: they came by without notice and found it closed · "reserve the tour in advance".

This is one of those places where you don't just look at Moldova's past · you actually feel it. You step inside a traditional rural Moldovan home and it's almost like going back in time. I especially love the passion behind the place and the idea of preserving these old houses instead of letting them disappear. When I bring groups here, I usually integrate the museum into a bigger adventure · hiking or cycling through Molovata Nouă and the neighboring villages before stopping here to experience the history and local culture.
