The Dniester Riviera, from above and unhurried · old vines, local grapes and roads on two wheels

10 placesNatural winemaker · Eco Wine of Moldova

Father, martial artist, drone pilot and digital creator, and since 2019 a winemaker too. That year he found Molovata Noua, on the Cocieri plateau, a village the Dniester wraps around on three sides, and stayed. He took over a vineyard more than 30 years old and kept the varieties that have grown there for generations: Crească, Târasă, Zaibăr, Castel and Viorica. He makes natural, minimal intervention wine: no added yeasts, no sugar, water, chemicals or preservatives. Just fermented grape juice, the way it used to be made.

About Vladimir

His wines are called Sofia and Paola, made in small batches with the number written by hand on the label. The grapes grow without irrigation and without chemicals, on sandy loam soils above the water. Moldova's first natural wine club started from his cellar, and in summer he takes guests along the Dniester Riviera by bike. "It is the same kinda wine that our ancestors used to drink", he says about what he makes.

10 soulful places

The Dniester Riviera, from above and unhurried · old vines, local grapes and roads on two wheels

1Molovata Nouă

One of my favorite places to escape from Chișinău. What I love most about Vila Dorului is that sometimes you almost forget you're in Moldova · sitting by the Nistru, it feels like you're somewhere by the sea. There is a swimming pool, tennis court and sauna, and you can take a jet ski or boat out on the river. I sometimes make it the relaxing part of a longer Molovata Nouă adventure after hiking or exploring the surrounding villages.

2Molovata Nouă

This is one of those places where you don't just look at Moldova's past · you actually feel it. You step inside a traditional rural Moldovan home and it's almost like going back in time. I especially love the passion behind the place and the idea of preserving these old houses instead of letting them disappear. When I bring groups here, I usually integrate the museum into a bigger adventure · hiking or cycling through Molovata Nouă and the neighboring villages before stopping here to experience the history and local culture.

Obviously I'm a little biased with this one, but Eco Wine of Moldova is much more than wine for me. We're a tiny family-owned winery making natural wines using old methods, without additives. We're also restoring an old traditional village home that will become our home base. The idea is to let people actually experience village life · join us during the grape harvest, make pickles, hike, camp or explore the neighboring villages by bicycle. We have 10 bikes and organize guided rides and private adventures around the Nistru region. This is really the Moldova I want more people to discover.

4Butuceni

Probably my favorite place to bring someone who wants to taste traditional Moldovan food. Butuceni does a great job of making our traditions feel alive instead of turning them into a museum display. I love the food, the old houses and especially the cellars packed with pickles, preserves and everything our grandparents used to prepare for winter. It's also a perfect ending to a day hiking around Orheiul Vechi, and there are different traditional workshops and masterclasses that can be added to the experience.

One of my favorite places in Moldova when I actually want to disconnect and reset. It's right by a lake and forest, and the combination of sauna, cold plunges and nature is incredible. I normally organize this as a private experience for groups of around 10-12 people. We bring in a professional steam master and sometimes a sound-healing practitioner, which takes the whole experience to another level. Combine it with a hike through the Codri beforehand and you have a pretty epic day.

6Molovata

A really cool family-owned restaurant and guesthouse right by the Nistru. What I like here is the character · it doesn't feel like somebody copied a hotel concept from somewhere else. The traditional reed roof, beautiful cellar, good food and location by the river give the whole place its own personality. It's also a great stop when exploring this part of the Nistru, especially when you connect several villages into one trip.

Hanul lui Hanganu is another place I really enjoy along the Nistru. The views are beautiful and the food is great, but what always stands out to me is their incredible cellar. It's one of the most creative I've seen in Moldova, with a huge variety of homemade distillates infused with different fruits and herbs. It's a place I like incorporating into trips through this part of Moldova because you can combine nature and exploration during the day with great food and a relaxed evening by the river.

For me, this is one of the best resort escapes without really leaving Chișinău behind. You're only a few kilometers outside the city, but suddenly you have vineyards, forest views, good food, wine and a swimming pool around you. I especially like the possibility of dining in the vineyards. The boutique hotel is beautiful, and the top rooms with a jacuzzi have some of the best views over the forests and outskirts of Chișinău. It's an easy place to include when someone wants a more comfortable, premium Moldova experience without traveling far.

This is one I'm especially excited about because it's something new. Unicorn Winery sits up on the hills around Saca, and for me the views are the star of the show · you look out across this incredible landscape of rolling hills that reminds you how beautiful central Moldova actually is. The winery itself is brand new, making the 2026 wine season an especially interesting time to discover it. I think it will become a great stop to combine with hiking, countryside exploration and wine in this part of Moldova.

This place is special because you don't feel like a customer · you feel like you've been invited to someone's home. It's family-owned, visits need to be arranged in advance, and the owner actually spends time with you. He bakes bread, serves locally grown fruits and vegetables and makes small quantities of natural sparkling wine. For me, this is the real Moldovan gospodar experience: farming, food, wine and hospitality all connected. It's exactly the kind of small, authentic place I love introducing people to when I organize private trips around Moldova.

A day with Vladimir

Want to see the Dniester Riviera with the man who makes the wine there? Tell me the date, how many you are and whether you prefer bikes or walking, and I will put the day together: the village, the mines, the river bank, lunch in a country home and the tasting at the end. We keep ten bikes, if you go for the two-wheel version.

April to October · around €200 a day for up to four people · for larger groups, €50 to €100 per person, depending on how we arrange food, transport and wine
