Eco Wine of Moldova
A family winery making natural wine, on the hills of Molovata Nouă
A day with Vladimir around Molovata Nouă · cycling or hiking, the mines and the Dniester bank, lunch in the village, then the natural wine tasting
Worth it for the whole day, not just the glass · old vines with varieties you will not find in shops, cycling or walking through the village, the mines and the views over the Dniester, lunch in a country home. Arranged directly with the host, so call ahead.
A family winery at Molovata Nouă, on the plateau the Dniester wraps around on three sides. In 2019 Vladimir took over a vineyard more than thirty years old and kept the varieties that have grown there for generations: Crească, Târasă, Zaibăr, Castel and Viorica. He makes natural wine with minimal intervention, no added yeast, no sugar, water or preservatives. What people book here is not a cellar visit but a whole day. Guests describe cycling or hiking through the village and the neighbouring ones, a tour of the local mines, views over the Dniester and lunch in a village home, before the wine part. Groups come too, for team-building days. A sommelier with years in the trade wrote that this is the kind of place you would never find on your own. Tastings are held at the Peasants' Museum in the village, by appointment. The wines carry two family names, Sofia and Paola, in lots of a few dozen hand-numbered bottles. Those who have drunk them describe the whites as fresh, with citrus notes and a long finish, and the reds as deeply coloured, with firm tannins and noticeable oak. Sofia red is the one named most often as a favourite.

Obviously I'm a little biased with this one, but Eco Wine of Moldova is much more than wine for me. We're a tiny family-owned winery making natural wines using old methods, without additives. We're also restoring an old traditional village home that will become our home base. The idea is to let people actually experience village life · join us during the grape harvest, make pickles, hike, camp or explore the neighboring villages by bicycle. We have 10 bikes and organize guided rides and private adventures around the Nistru region. This is really the Moldova I want more people to discover.

- By appointment only · this is not a winery with an open door, visits are arranged beforehand by phone
- Tastings are held at the Peasants Museum in Molovata Nouă, not at the vineyard
- Far · about an hour from Chișinău, on the bank of the Dniester, you need a car
