Worth the trip north for the rare circular shape and the view from the ramparts over the Dniester · a renovated fortress with a small museum and a cheap ticket. Come Wednesday to Sunday and read up beforehand, there are no guided tours, per one visitor.
A circular medieval stone fortress with five towers on the bank of the Dniester, in the centre of Soroca, 135 km from Chișinău as the crow flies. It is part of the medieval chain of fortifications along the Dniester; per historical sources it was raised in wood under Stephen the Great in 1499 and rebuilt in stone under Petru Rareș between 1543 and 1546. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00-17:30, closed Monday and Tuesday, per Google. Reviews, after the two-year renovation: "a marvellous fortress with a unique round shape · I have never seen a fortress like this before", with several levels open to the public, a tower you can climb and "the panoramic viewpoint from the ramparts, breathtaking", with views of the Dniester and of Ukraine on the opposite bank. Inside there is "a small museum that gives great context about its strategic importance". The ticket was 30 lei per adult, "very affordable"; tickets are bought at an office the signs lead to, not at the entrance. The fortress is "well equipped with mobility infrastructure for people with disabilities". One visitor regrets there are no guided tours: "read available information online before visiting".
