Built in 1538 by the Ottomans, Bender Fortress sits on the right bank of the Dniester River, its red-brick towers and massive stone walls intact after five centuries. You can walk the crenellated ramparts, climb the round tower for river views, explore the torture museum in the underground chambers, and wander the manicured courtyards. It's the oldest monument in Transnistria and one of the best-preserved fortresses in the region. Come in the morning for golden light on the brickwork, or late afternoon for a peaceful stroll along the fortifications. Entrance is very affordable (50 Transnistrian rubles for foreigners), and there's a small souvenir shop near the exit. English-speaking staff at the tourist info center can arrange guided tours.
