Defileul Duruitoarea Veche
A wild gorge of limestone cliffs, grottoes and views over the Prut, lovely at sunset
A hike through the gorge past the limestone reefs and the Paleolithic grotto, with viewpoints over the Prut floodplain at sunset.
A gorge that looks far better in person than in photos, with rocks to scramble and rare views. Access is easy, but wear hiking shoes. Worth it for a taste of raw nature off the beaten path.
Hidden between rocks and hills near Duruitoarea, the gorge is one of the most striking in northern Moldova. Dirt paths climb among limestone reefs to the Paleolithic grotto and wide viewpoints over the Prut floodplain. It is raw, unmanaged nature: a spring on the trail, geese in the nearby yards and quiet. At its best at sunrise or sunset.
