1902 Orthodox cathedral on Stefan cel Mare Boulevard
1902 Orthodox cathedral + original oak iconostasis + daily services
Transfiguration of the Saviour Cathedral (popularly known as «St. Pantelimon Church» or «the church on Stefan cel Mare Blvd») is one of the most important Orthodox churches in Chișinău, built in 1902 to a design by architect Mihail Cekerul-Kuș in eclectic Neo-Romanian-Russian style, with a large gilded dome and 4 smaller lateral domes. Construction was funded by merchants from the Botanica district (then predominantly Russian-speaking) to mark the 25th anniversary of the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War. The interior preserves the original hand-carved oak iconostasis with Byzantine icons, restored frescoes (the church was used as warehouse in Soviet times), Murano crystal chandeliers. Transfiguration feast (6 August) draws 5000+ pilgrims annually. Daily Orthodox liturgies in Slavonic and Romanian.

Stepping inside is like walking into a living pi…”

It was built between 1898 and 1902, and the dome was once used as a planetarium during the Cold War when Gagarin successfully went into space. After several renovations, it is in its current form.”
“The full name of this cathedral is quite a mouthful, however, it seems apt having had the pleasure of visiting it. On a stunning day without a cloud in the sky the cathedral roof glinted spectacularly on our approach - it was a real eye-catcher but this was only the warm-up. Inside the Fresco's are absolutely stunning. The depictions are graphic, memorable and remarkable and w…”
