Curchi Monastery in Codrii Orheiului (Curchi village, Orhei district) was founded in 1773 by brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi. The first church (St. Demetrius, 1775) was wooden, built by Iordache Curchi as founder and first abbot. The 18-19th century architectural ensemble includes 5 churches, two cell buildings, abbot quarters, hermitage with arhondaric 500m away, stone basin and orchard. Architectural styles: «Nativity of the Mother of God» church (1775) — baroque with classicist elements; «St. Nicholas» (1808-1810) — classicism with neo-Byzantine spire. On UNESCO monument list. Destroyed in 1958 by Soviet regime; restored after 1989.

“Beautiful 18th century monastery complex. Very peaceful (minus the leaf blower). Transport: You can take a marshrutka from Chisinau Bus Station to Ghetlova, it stops right outside the village. You may wait a while for a return, we ended up hitchhiking to Ohrei.”
