St. Great Martyr George Monastery in Suruceni (Ialoveni district, 25km from Chișinău) was founded in 1785 by boyar Casian Suruceanu, following the advice of Montenegrin hieromonk Iosif. Initially a monks' hermitage, then a nuns' monastery. The wooden church was built in 1794, when the boyar donated 40 hectares of land. Between 1825-1832 the stone «St. George» church was built in place of the wooden one. In 1860 — the second church, «St. Hierarch Nicholas» with a crypt in the basement. During the Tsarist period (1812-1918), 24 abbots led the hermitage. Poetic location — on a forested hill, surrounded by vineyards and orchards.
