The Holy Ascension Monastery Hârjauca (Hârjauca village, Călărași district, 25km from Călărași, 60km from Chișinău) is one of central Moldova's oldest hermitages. Founded in 1740 by monk Teodosie, an elder who built a small prayer house for fugitives hiding in the forests. He was joined by two monks from Mănăstirea Neamț — hieromonk Varsonufie and monk Inochentie (originally from Călărași). To serve the new monastic community, boyar Niculiță built a small wooden church with straw roof (Dormition of the Mother of God). The hermitage was chosen in the vicinity of a spring with reputed healing waters — still today the main reason for pilgrimage.
