The Cave (rock-cut) Monastery of Butuceni is the most visited historic site in the Old Orhei Cultural-Natural Reserve, carved directly into the limestone cliff of the Răut river meander in the 13-14th centuries by Orthodox Christian monks. For long periods served as refuge for hermit monks, then used as parish church for Butuceni villagers. Closed by Soviet regime in 1944, reopened for worship in 1996. Access via iron hatch and stone stairs descending into the rock; interior decorated with old paintings, oil lamps and icons. Three levels of cave with separate cells, monastic seat, altar carved in rock.

“Part of the Orhei Old complex. Built in the 15th century, you can go inside this cave Monastery, get very close to the cliff and see the old chambers. Cool place Your 20 MLD ticket at the entrance of the complex gives you access to all the buildings in this area”
“Our driver recommended this place and took us there. Although the roads from Chisinau were quite rough, the drive through the countryside was interesting. The monastery is just a short 10-minute walk from the parking lot. The building itself is impressive and well-maintained. Unfortunately, the store was closed during our visit.
