Chișinău's most recognisable symbol - a must-stop at the entrance to the Public Garden on any tour of the capital.
The Monument of Stephen the Great and Holy is the iconic symbol of Chișinău, unveiled on 29 April 1928 to a design by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală - red Mautheim granite, bronze cast in Bucharest, total height 11 m (4 m statue + 7 m pedestal). The Voivode of Moldova (1457-1504) is depicted with the cross raised in his left hand (symbolizing the defense of Christianity) and the sword in his right hand. The pedestal is decorated with bas-reliefs of episodes from his life: the battle of Vaslui (1475), the battle of Războieni (1476). Placed at the entrance to Cathedral Park and the Eugen Doga pedestrian promenade, the monument is the point zero of any visit to the capital, the official place for laying wreaths on national holidays (27 August, 31 August).
