Suta de Movile
Unique European geological formation: 3500 mounds in the Prut valley
Trekking through Europe's only natural mound formation + birdwatching
Suta de Movile is a globally unique geological reserve — 3500 natural mounds, 5 to 30 m tall, spread over 1600 ha in the Glodeni-Edineț area, formed 8000-10000 years ago by mushroom-shaped landslides. Seen from above, they look like a herd of buried whales. The reserve hosts 500+ plant species (many rare — peony, lady's slipper, iris) and 250+ bird species (booted eagle, peregrine falcon). Ramsar Site and part of the Council of Europe Emerald Network. Two marked hiking trails (5 and 12 km) start from Branişte and Cobani villages. Best time: April-May (peony bloom) and September-October (autumn colours).

“There are many hills but they are mostly small. There is only one really high hill where you get a splendid view in all the directions. You shouldn't go there only for the hills. Nearby there is the Bison Reserve and the Rocks in Cobani and Butesti.”
“An interesting place, but not worth traveling only for it. But, if you are in the north part of the country visiting other locations it would be nice to add this location to the list.”
“A place to visit while you driving to Duruitoarea or Cobani. It is an area with a lot of hills that looks very strange in comparison with the rest of the landforms. For the best view it is recommended to climb the one with a christian cross on top.”
- Last 3 km on dirt road
- No café or toilet
- Strong wind in autumn/winter
