Metropolitan Cathedral «Nativity of the Lord» in Great National Assembly Square was built between 1830-1836 following the idea of Metropolitan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni. Architect: Avraam Melnikov (chosen by competition), neoclassical empire style with ancient Greek forms for columns. The bell tower was built simultaneously with the cathedral, placed 40m from it, with 4 levels (3 prismatic with successively retreating sides, the 4th cylindrical as bell pavilion, dome-covered). Demolished in the 1960s by the Soviet regime and reconstructed in 1998 after period images. Today it is Moldova's most visited cathedral, hosting official services on Christmas, Easter, and Independence Day.
