For anyone who wants Moldovan and European fine art in a restored historic building in the city centre (2.8 km in a straight line from the centre). Hours: closed Monday, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00 (per Google and the site). Full ticket 50 lei, pupils 10 lei, students and pensioners 25 lei, free on the last Wednesday of the month (per the site). Worth knowing: a 3-star review describes some rooms as feeling empty, with fewer works on display than expected; a 4-star review says the route through the building is hard to follow and that there is no gift shop.
According to the museum website, the main Dadiani building was built in 1901 to a design by architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, originally as a school for girls, and became part of the museum only in 1989. The museum itself was founded in 1939, with a first collection of 161 works, made up mostly of donations from Bessarabian artists and works signed Th. Pallady, N. Tonitza, H. Maxy and I. Jalea; that collection was lost in 1941, moved toward Tiraspol and Kharkiv, and rebuilt after the war through acquisitions and donations. Three earthquakes in 1990 badly damaged the central wing, which stayed closed to the public for over twenty-five years while exhibitions continued uninterrupted in the annexes; restoration ran in stages, 2004-2016 and 2021, and the restored spaces of the Dadiani seat now total 3,268 square metres. The current holdings run to 39,767 pieces, spanning the 15th to 21st centuries. The museum also holds in custody the Church of the Dormition in Căușeni, a 16th century monument.
