Biblioteca Națională a Moldovei
180-year-old heritage library with grand reading rooms and a courtyard
Large quiet reading hall with free access to rare books
The National Library of Moldova has existed since 1832 — one of the country's oldest cultural institutions. The main building on 31 August street has tall ceilings, large reading rooms, and a beautiful interior courtyard for book launches and exhibitions. You'll find rare volumes, historic manuscripts, and access to academic databases. A reader's card is issued quickly and free. Perfect for a quiet afternoon with a book; free lockers. Closed Fridays; summer rooms can run warm with weak AC. Good café across the street.

“The place isn’t really suitable for studying. The workers are speaking with each other or on the phone all the time in all halls. The place is cold in fall. Just a waste of huge building. Randomly thrown chairs and tables with sometimes charging sockets. Plus random teachers conduct their lessons here without really caring about everyone else’s work. Disappointing”
“Wonderful library. High ceilings inside with multiple areas to work or read. Great courtyard at the front. I experience positive feeling and a calm mind each time I spend time here. Great cafe across the road you get hungry or thirsty. Free lockers to store your bags before you enter. Don’t forget your library card! Thanks to the staff who run this place. 👍👍👍”
“One of the eldest library in Moldova with a history for more than 180 years. With a large volume of books, you can find almost anything you look for it, even they allow you to access their rare collection of books.”
- Occasional noise (phones, impromptu lessons)
- Cold in autumn
- Closed on Fridays
