Bison Reserve
European bison sanctuary in old-growth forest with walking trails and wooden sculptures
A herd of European bison you can watch from just a few meters away, along a tourist trail flanked by monumental wooden sculptures
Worth it if you have extra time in the Pădurea Domnească: European bison visible from a few meters away, along a trail among wooden sculptures. A fine choice for a short nature stop, especially with kids.
The Bison Reserve inside Pădurea Domnească (Royal Forest) is home to a small herd of European bison across 30 hectares of centuries-old woodland. The tourist trail winds through quiet paths lined with monumental wood carvings - bulls, circular gates, totems - with a stop at the bison enclosure, where you can observe these imposing mammals up close. The atmosphere is secluded and quiet: on weekdays you'll meet barely a few visitors, ideal for a picnic at the wooden tables or a slow walk. Summer is the liveliest, when the bison come out to the shade and children can roam freely on the safe trails. In winter, the animals sleep more and may not be visible.

Location is based deep in woodland with some beautiful sculptures made of wood. Besides Bisons, there are dunkies and horses. We have managed to see just one bison as others were in the woodland. Workers said they would al…”
“Visited on 26 December 2024, we found 3 bisons 🦬, they were slightly grumpy, busy chewing, and didn't want to play with us. There is a payment machine that accepts only cash and doesn't give change, so have 50 lei prepared per person in cash. Overall, we really enjoyed the visit. The road could have been better, and be prepared for pothole avoidance exercise if you're driving.”
“Wonderful place to go with your girlfriend/wife or maybe friends. f they love nature, of course. Excellent for a chill walk in nature and very very quiet and reclusive. On Monday, when I was there, it wasn't busy at all. Actually, we where the only people. Have fun!”
- Payment machine cash-only with no change - bring exactly 50 lei
- In winter or on hot afternoons the bison sleep - you may not see them
- No wheelchair access - natural forest paths
