Chisinau City History Museum - Water Tower
Restored 1892 water tower with panoramic views · city history exhibition
1892 octagonal water tower with an exhibition of urban photography and a 360° panoramic rooftop terrace
Worth it for the city's historical context plus the panorama from the Water Tower terrace - a small but well-placed museum in the center.
The Chișinău City History Museum occupies the Water Tower (Water Castle) - the iconic eclectic-style building erected in 1892 by architect Alexandru Bernardazzi on the central hill to supply the city's first running-water system. The 28 m tower operated until 1985, then was turned into a museum (1995). The exhibition on 5 levels climbs through Chișinău's history: level 1 - prehistory (the archaeological sites of the Bîc valley), level 2 - the Middle Ages (15th-18th c., the village of Chișinău as part of the Land of Moldavia), level 3 - the tsarist period (1812-1918, its transformation into a Russian provincial town), level 4 - the interwar era and WWII (Romanian administration, Soviet occupation, the Jewish ghetto), level 5 - the Soviet era and independence (1991). From the balcony - a 360° panorama over the old centre, the Cathedral and Cathedral Park.

No English translation. - You can hire a guide in advance for 50 lei, but it’s only available in Russian and Romanian. - The stairs are very steep. There’s a small elevator, but it doesn’t take you all the…”
“Not your average museum, as it is located in what appears to be an old water tower. However, despite its small size and small rooms, I feel like it’s worth a visit while you’re in Chişinău. Almost all of the text was in Romanian, and of course some of the exhibits themselves were in Russian given their Soviet heritage. I spent around 30 minutes just looking at what was on dis…”
“Great place with small exhibition. Nice to step in during walking across city. Top floor with super view terrace. Super friendly madam at entrance.”
- Exhibit mostly in Romanian - English translation missing
- No elevator - spiral staircase difficult for people with limited mobility
