Filarmonica Națională „Serghei Lunchevici"
The main hall of the Moldovan Philharmonic - home of the National Symphony Orchestra
Symphony concert by the Moldovan National Orchestra
Worth it if you want serious symphonic music in Chișinău - the National Symphony Orchestra, international recitals and highlights like the Mărțișor Festival. Consistently strong programming through the season.
The Serghei Lunchevici National Philharmonic is Moldova's main symphonic-music institution - founded in 1940 (the Symphony Orchestra dates from 1930), renamed in 2003 in memory of conductor Serghei Lunchevici. It hosts two main ensembles: the National Symphony Orchestra (over 80 musicians, a Mozart-Beethoven-Brahms-Bartók repertoire plus contemporary Moldovan premieres) and the Moldovan Academic Choir. The Philharmonic building was severely damaged by a fire in September 2020, when part of the ceiling of the main hall collapsed; check the status and concert location before your visit. Annual program: 60+ symphonic concerts, recitals by international guests (pianists, violinists, sopranos), themed festivals (the Mărțișor Festival in March, the Ethnic Intelligence Festival). The Philharmonic is also the seat of the annual international 'Eugen Doga' competition for young composers. Affordable tickets (50-150 lei), student subscriptions.
