Dormition of the Mother of God Church (Căușeni) · Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului (Căușeni)
The semi-buried church of Căușeni - 1763 frescoes in the Hurezi school style, a monument unique in the East-Carpathian space
A semi-buried church with complete 1763 frescoes in the Hurezi school style
A must for heritage lovers: a semi-buried church with complete 1763 frescoes - Moldova's last great medieval fresco, freshly restored. Pair it with a southern winery (GOGU, Sălcuța) for a full day.
The "Dormition of the Mother of God" church in Căușeni is one of Moldova's most precious medieval monuments: a church set below ground level - a consequence of Ottoman law in the Bugeac raya, which forbade churches from rising above mosques - with low white walls and a tiled roof barely lifting out of the meadow. Inside, the surprise: the interior was fully frescoed in 1763 by painters Stanciul, Radu and Voicul in the late style of the Hurezi school - considered the final stage of medieval Moldovan fresco, unique in the East-Carpathian space. Extensively restored in recent years and reopened to visitors, it is run as a monument-museum. ~75 minutes from Chișinău, it pairs naturally with GOGU Winery or Sălcuța for a southern day trip.

“A gorgeous small historic church that has been lovingly restored. Its frescoes and other art are muted in comparison to the rather gaudy decor of many larger and newer churches. I was lucky to visit early in the morning with an excellent guide who is herself one of the experts restoring the church. I was touched and inspired. I am not one for meditation, but was tempted by the …”
