Călărășeuca Monastery
1782 Orthodox monastery on the Dniester - northern Moldova spiritual jewel
1782 monastery + miracle-working icon + Dniester panorama + monk products
Worth it if you're exploring the north - an old Orthodox monastery on the bank of the Dniester, with a quiet view over the river. Pairs well with a Soroca/Edineț trip.
Călărășeuca Monastery is one of the oldest and most impressive Orthodox monasteries in northern Moldova, located on the rocky bank of the Dniester in Călărășeuca village (Ocnița district), 220 km north of Chișinău. The main church was built by Hagi Marcu Donici of Movilău and consecrated in 1782, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God (the monastic settlement is attested as early as the 17th century); the monastery occupies a spectacular terrace above the Dniester with panoramic views toward Ukraine. The complex includes: the main church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God (built 1782-1840, fully restored 2005-2012, with a hand-carved oak iconostasis and restored Byzantine frescoes), a winter chapel, the abbot's house (19th c), monks' cells, a holy-water spring (considered healing), and an orchard and vegetable garden tended by the monks. Visitors can attend the daily services, witness the procession with the miracle-working icon on the patronal feast (28 August) and sample the monastery's products (honey, country wine, sheep cheese).
