Codrii Tigheciului · Pădurea Tigheci
Ancient forest in southern Moldova, with oaks around 500 years old
Trekking the millenary forest + visit to the Ștefan cel Mare oak
Worth it for a hike in the south, through an old forest with a sense of history - among its draws, an oak close to 500 years old and legends going back to the time of Ștefan cel Mare.
Codrii Tigheciului (Tigheci Forest) is a landscape reserve of about 2,519 ha between the villages of Lărguța and Capaclia (Cantemir district) - one of the largest forests in southern Moldova, dominated by sessile oak and hornbeam, with an oak sector to the south (the oldest oaks are around 500 years old). Legend says Petru Rareș, son of Ștefan cel Mare, was raised in these woods. (The Oak of Ștefan cel Mare is in Cobâlea village in the north of the country, Șoldănești district - not in Codrii Tigheciului.) A state reserve since 1975, it hosts 800+ plant species, 50+ rare bird species (goshawk, green woodpecker) and large carnivores (wolf, fox, marten). Two marked trails (8 and 14 km) with interpretive signs start from Tiganca village. Best time: April-May (a carpet of snowdrops and corydalis) and October (autumn colours).
