Codrii Tigheciului · Pădurea Tigheci
Ancient forest in southern Moldova, home to the millenary oak
Trekking the millenary forest + visit to the Ștefan cel Mare oak
Codrii Tigheciului (Tigheci Forest) covers 12,000 ha in Cantemir and Leova districts — the largest compact forest in southern Moldova, with secular oaks (some over 500 years old), beech and hornbeam. Here stands the famous Oak of Ștefan cel Mare in Cobâlea village, with a 9 m circumference and an estimated 700+ years, under which legend says the voivode sheltered before the Battle of Cahul. A state reserve since 1971, it hosts 800+ plant species, 50+ rare bird species (goshawk, green woodpecker) and large carnivores (wolf, fox, marten). Two marked trails (8 and 14 km) start from Tiganca village. Best time: April-May (snowdrops carpet) and October (autumn colours).
