Văratic Gorge · Defileul Văratic
Narrow gorge with limestone cliffs, wind-carved caves, and a seasonal stream through old beech forest
A narrow gorge with limestone walls up to 20 m, wind-carved caves and a panoramic view over the Codru from the top
A scenic gorge in northern Moldova, part of the Prut Toltry landscape - limestone walls, rare steppe vegetation and quiet. Worth it for a short hike in untouched nature; come for the scenery and the air, not for infrastructure.
A natural gorge carved by the Văratic stream into the limestone bedrock of the Central Codru forest, with sheer walls up to 20 meters, small caves, and a seasonal waterfall after rain. The trailhead is unmarked - park in a roadside field and follow the path for 15 minutes through beech and oak woods. At the top, a sweeping view over the green canopy. Best visited in spring (April-May) when the stream flows and wildflowers bloom, or late autumn for copper foliage. Perfect for a short 1-2 hour hike, a quiet picnic on the rim, or landscape photography. No facilities - bring water, sturdy shoes for uneven terrain, and offline maps. A hidden gem for those who enjoy discovering Moldova's quiet corners without crowds.

“A small but charming gorge. There are no signs. The parking lot is just in a field. From there, it's a 15-minute walk to the gorge. If you're passing by, you can stop in, but there's no point in making a special trip.”
“It's beautiful, you can ride up on a motorcycle and go to the highest cliff, from where a wonderful view opens up.”
“A special landscape, caves, waterfall. Worth a visit”
- No official markings · you need to know where the trail starts
- Improvised parking on the roadside in the field
- No facilities at all (no toilet, no water, no shops)
