The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History on Mihail Kogălniceanu Street 82A is Moldova's oldest museum. History begins in 1889 with the Agricultural-Industrial Exhibition organized by the Bessarabian Zemstva. Founder-custodian: Franz Ostermann (1844-1905), born in Bohemia, first curator of the entomological collection. His wife Albina Osterman founded the ethnographic collections. Current building completed 1905, inaugurated June 1906 — in a Moorish-Oriental style unique in Chișinău. Important collections: mammoth skeleton discovered at Cocieri (the largest exhibit in Moldova), Moldovan steppe evolution, regional folk costumes, birds, fossils, herbarium.

“This museum is one of the nicest and coolest museums in the regions. Its bigger than youd think! We came here with a trolleybus to a nearby station and walked a little to reach the museum. The building on the outside looks very cool and has an intresting architecture. Tickets are cheap and it wasnt even that busy when we came. The staff is very friendly and helpfull. There…”
“Nice museum, is way bigger than it seems. There are many additional rooms underground. On many things you can find an englisch translation, we paid 25 lei per person if I remember correctly (students)”
