Plaiul Fagului · Beech Forest Preserve
Beech-forest reserve with a quiet mountain lake, reeds, wooded hills and marked trails · Moldova's westernmost protected forest
Day hike with picnic by the reed-fringed lake · pick up the marked-trail map at the forestry administration on the way in
Plaiul Fagului is the nature reserve that protects one of the last wild beech forests in Moldova — 5,642 hectares of mountain forest east of Ungheni, with marked trails, quiet lakes and a microclimate unique to the country. The classic view: a small lake in the middle of the forest perfectly reflecting white clouds on a blue sky, banks covered in tall reeds, and wooded hills rising behind. The air here is plainly different from the Moldovan steppe — real coolness even in August, smell of damp leaves and earth. The forestry administration manages the site, provides maps and sometimes guides. Perfect for a day hike with picnic, or for birdwatching.
- One of Moldova's last wild beech forests — biological treasure
- The reed-fringed lake is photo-perfect, especially in spring
- Real coolness in summer — escape the Moldovan heat
- Marked trails of various difficulties
- Good birdwatching — woodpeckers, herons, songbirds
- Quiet enough that you can hear leaves rustle
- The mirror-still lake reflecting clouds and forest hills, reeds in the foreground
- Beech-forest canopy with light filtering through, leaves on the ground
- A trail sign at a wooden trailhead with the forest map and a stamped marker
