Anton Chekhov Russian State Theatre
Classical Russian drama theatre with 84-year heritage · Chekhov, Dostoevsky, and Shaw on the main stage
Classic Russian drama — Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, Turgenev — performed by a dedicated company on the main stage with period sets
The Anton Chekhov Russian State Theatre is the home of classical Russian drama in Chișinău – a main auditorium with velvet seats, grand stage with period sets, and a dedicated troupe performing Chekhov, Dostoevsky, and Turgenev in Pushkin's language. The building on Vlaicu Pârcălab has a modest exterior, but the interior is surprisingly elegant: halls with coffered ceilings, chandelier-lit foyer, the atmosphere of a lovingly preserved Soviet-era theatre. The season runs September to June; Friday and Saturday evening performances are the most sought-after, and tickets for premieres directed by Constantin Haret sell out on day one. The repertoire is in Russian, with occasional subtitles – for those who understand the language, it's a profound experience; for tourists, the visual spectacle and actors' craft remain memorable. Note: the building shows its age and could use renovation, but the performances shine regardless.

“The wonderful troupe of the Chekhov Theater completed its 84th season with a premiere, playing The White Rabbit or "When Not All is Home" by Mary Chase's "Harvey". Despite the fact that the building needs some repairs and the buffet really adhears to the long-standing Soviet traditions (standards), you will be satisfied with the performance of your favorite actors, if you visit…”
“Must see!!! Performance, the play and atmosphere makes your experience a totally wonderful like you are the part of show(of course if you can understand context in native language)!”
“This is the only theater in town that sticks to classical traditions of Russian acting. Actors are dedicated and genuine - all classical dramas are worth visiting. Director K. Haret is both a great actor and an advocate of the theater who makes sure it moves forward with improvements (new production & upgrades around the theater). Highly recommend!”
- The building shows wear and needs interior renovation
- Seats in the main hall are close together with limited row spacing
- Performances are in Russian without consistent subtitles
