Stâncile Butești · Toltrele Prutului
15-million-year-old fossil coral reef on the upper Prut
Hiking the fossil cliffs + Palaeolithic cave + Prut panoramas
Butești Cliffs are part of the Toltre Prut complex — a chain of limestone cliffs formed from a Sarmatian coral reef 15-20 million years ago, unique in Eastern Europe. At 70 m above the Prut, the cliffs offer spectacular views over the river valley and the Romanian border. Inside the rock — karst caves (Butești Cave with 40,000-year-old Palaeolithic finds: mammoth bones and tools), climbing traverses for enthusiasts and grottoes used as medieval refuges. Rare calcicolous flora (lady's slipper, "voinic" blood), 180+ bird species (lesser spotted eagle, peregrine). Two marked trails (4 and 9 km) from Butești village, easy access. Best: April-May and September-October.
