Butești Cave
Natural cave with unique rock formations in northern Moldova, by the Prut Toltres (Glodeni)
A natural cave with eroded limestone formations, reached on foot through the forest of northern Moldova
A cave in the limestone reefs of the Prut Toltry - formations millions of years old from a vanished sea, in northern Moldova. Worth it for the dramatic rock scenery and the sense of living geology; a short, spectacular stop on the Toltry trail.
Butești Cave is a natural limestone cavity carved into the bedrock and hidden within the forest near the Pădurea Domnească nature reserve. Weathered rock formations and a discreet entrance make it a favorite spot for local hikers and nature explorers. The cave is reached on foot via a forest trail and is often visited together with the nearby Bison Reserve and Suta Movile (100 Hills). Best visited in spring or autumn when the weather is pleasant and the forest is at its most photogenic. Bring sturdy footwear, a torch, and expect a 1-2 hour hike round-trip from the nearest forest access point.
