From Chișinău to Văleni is about 210 km, roughly three hours of driving on the M3, via Cimișlia and Comrat. The route via Hîncești, Leova and Cantemir (R34) is slightly shorter but about 25 minutes slower. It is a longer drive than it looks on the map, but it fits into a Friday afternoon, and at the end of it is the wildest part of the country: the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve, Lake Beleu and the village of Văleni, named one of the UNWTO "Best Tourism Villages 2023".

The drive south and the first evening in Văleni
Leave in the afternoon, reach your lodging in the last light, and give the evening to the sky.
If you leave Chișinău at 13:00, you reach Văleni around 16:30, just before sunset. The village is small, and the lodgings are renovated farmhouses, a complex built like an old village and a few family guesthouses. Book ahead: rooms are few and fill up at weekends.
The most-reviewed lodging in the village, built like a traditional village, with Moldovan-style houses and quiet all around. A good base for two nights.
Tip If you drive an electric car, ask when booking whether you can charge overnight from an outlet in the yard.
A family guesthouse in Văleni with home cooking. Lunch and dinner are served only on order, so say ahead if you want to eat there on Friday evening.
Sunrise at Beleu, the reserve and a family winery
The long day of the weekend. Wake early and finish at the winery with the last light.
In autumn, mornings over Lake Beleu are often misty, and the floodplain fills with migrating birds. It is cold at sunrise: bring a warm jacket, a flask and binoculars. From Văleni to the lake is a few minutes by car.
The reserve's largest lake, wild and without any facilities. At sunrise, with mist on the water, it is the reason it is worth getting up early.
Tip Do not enter the 15 m strip along the border, on the Prut bank, without a permit from ePermis. The villages and the roads to the lake are open with an ID card.
The reserve administration, Moldova's only UNESCO site. This is where you learn where you can go and which birds are around that week.
Tip On Saturday and Sunday the office is open only 8:00-14:00, according to Google. Come in the morning.
An agritourism farm in Slobozia Mare, next to the reserve: horses, quad rides and house wine, with hosts Artur and his wife.
Tip No website · you find out which activities run on your day and what they cost only by phone.
The long lunch of the day, at Tanti Mașa's: you cook local Lower Prut recipes with her and stay at the table. Her preserves are the star of the house.
Tip It is a home, not a restaurant · call at least a day ahead.
A family winery in Slobozia Mare, the best-rated small winery in the catalogue. In autumn the vineyards around it turn colour, and the tasting is with the hosts.
Tip Come early in the afternoon to see the vineyards in daylight: at the end of October the sun sets around 17:00. Places are few, book ahead.
Honey, embroidery and the road home
A slower morning, two stops on the way north and a midday departure.
The Chetroi family apiary in Brînza, with hives made of reed. A tasting of honeydew honey, honeycomb and royal jelly.
Tip Open 10:00-17:00 on Sunday, closed on Saturday. Brînza is on the way north, between Văleni and Cahul.
In Colibași, on the way to Cahul: Elizaveta Dorin teaches guests to sew their own ie blouse with altiță, with motifs from southern Moldova, or to embroider a headscarf. She also makes straw pictures and hats.
Tip The hours on Google are not confirmed by anyone · call before you stop.
Practical
The drive and the distances
- Chișinău-Văleni · ~210 km, about 3 hours on the M3, via Cimișlia and Comrat. Via Hîncești, Leova and Cantemir (R34): 198 km, about 3 h 20 min, with more scenery · good for the way back. Round trip plus the drives between villages comes to 450-480 km.
- On the ground · Văleni, Slobozia Mare and Lake Beleu are a few minutes from each other. Brînza and Colibași are on the road to Cahul.
- Stretches with no signal · download an offline map and save the hosts' phone numbers before you leave.
- The village roads are rough in places · drive slowly, especially in morning fog.
By electric car
- The round trip is more than the real range of many electric cars · plan a charge on the way or at your lodging.
- The last CCS2 fast charger on the way south, according to Google, is EcoFactor in Ialoveni (120 kW), on the edge of Chișinău · good for a top-up as you leave.
- In Cahul, Google shows AC Type 2 stations at 22 kW (EV Point, EcoFactor), and the connectors at eCharge and Eco Drive are not listed · check the operators' apps. Some fast chargers in Moldova have CCS1: with a CCS2-to-CCS1 adapter they can be used.
- On the way, in Comrat, Google shows a 50 kW CHAdeMO station · not compatible with CCS cars.
- The safest option · two nights on an ordinary outlet at your lodging. Ask the host ahead.
The border zone
- The villages on the Prut are in the border zone · an ID card is enough, no permit needed.
- The 15 m strip along the border, right on the Prut bank, needs an access permit. Apply online at epermis.border.gov.md.
- Drones, boats and fishing need separate permits or approvals, also through ePermis. Processing takes from an hour to three days.
Daylight at the end of October
- Before 25 October (summer time) · sunrise around 07:35, sunset around 18:05.
- From 25 October (winter time) · sunrise around 06:40-06:45, sunset around 17:00.
- Plan the winery and the walks for early afternoon · after sunset it gets cold and dark fast.
- What you see in autumn · morning mist, reeds and vineyards in colour, migrating birds. The water lilies on Beleu are a summer thing, not autumn.
Unexpected questions (with short answers)
Can the Lower Prut be done in a single weekend?
Yes, with two nights in Văleni: the drive on Friday, the floodplain and a winery on Saturday, two stops on the way home on Sunday. A single day there and back from Chișinău means almost six hours of driving, without a single stop.
Do I need a permit to go to the Prut?
An ID card is enough for the villages and roads in the area. You need a permit from epermis.border.gov.md only for the 15 m strip on the Prut bank, and for drones, boats or fishing.
Can I reach the Prut in an electric car?
Yes, but plan the charging. The round trip plus local driving goes past 450 km. Cahul has 22 kW AC stations, and the safest option is charging overnight at your lodging, with the host's agreement.
When is the best time to go?
From April to October. Summer for the water lilies on Beleu, spring and autumn for migrating birds. Autumn brings morning mist and coloured vineyards, but also short days and cold mornings.
