At Moldova's southern tip, the Prut slows before emptying into the Danube, and its floodplain widens into a system of lakes, reedbeds, and flooded forests. It's the country's wildest wetland - the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve, Moldova's only site in the worldwide UNESCO Man and the Biosphere network. Thousands of migrating birds arrive in spring and autumn, and in summer Lake Beleu fills with a carpet of white and yellow water lilies.
But the south isn't only nature. At its heart is Văleni, the Cahul-district village recognized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as one of the "Best Tourism Villages 2023" - the first time Moldova has received the distinction. Around it, villages with folk craftspeople still working leather and embroidery by hand, sheepfolds making cheese on the spot, apiaries in the Prut floodplain, and family wineries on the 45th parallel north, the same one the world's great vineyards sit on.

How to get there
- By car · the best option. Cahul is ~175 km south of Chișinău (2.5-3 h via Hîncești-Leova-Cantemir). Văleni, Slobozia Mare, and the lakes are 15-30 min from Cahul.
- By coach · regular Chișinău-Cahul services from the South Bus Station; from Cahul, the villages are harder to reach without a car.
- On the ground · the reserve, lakes, and villages need a car or a guesthouse that arranges local transport/guiding.
- Combinable with Galați (Romania) via the Oancea crossing, or with the Danube at Giurgiulești.
When to go
- Summer (June-August) · the lilies on Beleu are at their peak; it's also hot, bring water and a hat.
- Spring and autumn · the best bird migration - thousands of birds on the move.
